Last summer, after getting back from our honeymoon in Hawaii, Mark and I spontaneously bought ourselves a tiki bar and named it Tuesday’s (because Tuesday is the worst day of the week, and having a tiki bar to go to on Tuesdays would make it better). We wanted to be able to escape to island-life whenever we needed, even if we couldn’t actually leave New England.
When the first somewhat decent day in Massachusetts showed up, we knew we needed to make the most of it!
Enter: Luau night.
I tried to stay as authentic as possible when planning our meal. Thankfully, we went to a luau while we were in Hawaii so I knew pork was definitely a must. While pork roasts freak me out, and even if they didn’t we don’t have the ability to do one, a pork butt in the slow cooker worked out perfectly!
All the details and recipes are below. Mahalo!
Attire
- Hawaiian Tropic Casual
- Hawaiian shirts
- Leis or shell necklaces
Menu
Beverages
- Blue Hawaiian (frozen or on the rocks)
- Pina Colada
Appetizer
North Shore Garlic Shrimp
Main Course
Kailua Pork Sliders (Mark loves pulled pork, but I don’t always love the way he makes it. After making this recipe, I was told I make the best pulled pork. *insert smug smile here*)
Dessert
Hawaiian Nut Bread a la Mode (Definitely not the healthiest, but this bread is incredible! It also makes for a great breakfast. The recipe makes a lot, so I made two loaves and popped one in the freezer. One thing to note is that the recipe calls for walnuts, but I substituted macadamia nuts to make it more authentic.)
Activities
- Learn how to hula dance
- Watch Moana for the 394235872 time
For your entertainment, I’ve included a video of Mark and me attempting to learn how to hula to He Mele No Lilo from Lilo & Stitch. I had every intention of removing the original sound & playing a clearer version over the video…but I thought you all may enjoy the ridiculous comments we make throughout it.
