What is travel?
Is the term “travel” or “vacation” determined by how many miles you travel to reach your destination? Is it determined by how many days you spend away from home? Is it determined by whether or not the residents of your destination speak your native language? Is it determined by how old the oldest spires of the country are?
Once upon a time, my answer would have been (somewhat) simple: You need to travel at least 3 hours away from home & stay for a minimum of 48 hours.
I am here to tell you that I have recently discovered that I am WRONG.
I decided on a whim to book myself a trip to Copenhagen, Denmark in October & through my research on this country that I knew absolutely nothing about a month ago, I discovered the term hygge. I won’t pretend to really understand it at the moment as I am hoping to be able to give a full report upon my return after being immersed in the hygge culture. But for now, I understand it as basically taking time to enjoy the little things in life every single day.
Life is not about planning and waiting for the next “big” adventure; life is about finding the adventure in the every day.
“Travel” can be something as simple as visiting the little museum in the next town over. It can be taking a summer hike up that mountain you spend your winters skiing on. Travel can be literally anything new! They don’t call them “dayTRIPS” for nothing! Trust me when I tell you that you can technically travel with no money.
I live in one of (if not the) most historical state in the United States: Massachusetts.
The spirit of Massachusetts is the spirit of America…
So here it is, folks. My personal pledge. I will attempt to do at least two “trips” per month, even if they are as simple as finally walking the entire Freedom Trail and actually listening to what they try to teach me instead of planning out what to have for lunch at Faneuil Hall later. I will then report back here to you on how it was, what I learned, and how I’m feeling about this new take on life I’ve decided to go with.
(Disclaimer: It helps that I’m looking for excuses to practice with my new mirrorless camera…)
Stay tuned!
xx J
