“So no one told you life was gonna be this way…your life’s a joke, you’re broke, your love life’s DOA…It’s like you’re always stuck in second gear when it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month, or even your year…”
“I’ll Be There for You” – The Rembrandts
Who would have thought that the theme song to one of the top sitcoms of the 90s would be so applicable to most of our lives in 2020??? Here’s hoping that it just hasn’t been our day, week, or month and doesn’t extend to a year…
Our very first themed date night at home was 90s themed, and it had a heavy Friends influence…and by heavy I mean completely influenced by Friends. I wanted our first date night at home to be relatively easy and silly, and this seemed like the perfect theme to accomplish that with!
For our first one I think it went pretty well, if I do say so myself! It definitely set the bar high for the remainder of quarantine! All the details are below, including a link to any specific recipes I used.

The Menu
Appetizer
Can there be anymore dips??? (Name inspired by Chandler, but the answer is yes. There can always be more dips.)
This included:
- Freshly made beer bread (I used this recipe from King Arthur Flour. For beer, I used Grifo Black IPA from 3Cross. Highly recommend!)
- Chips
- Garlic Garlic Dip by Alicia’s Homemade, a Worcester company that I have been buying from since they first opened in 2015. Everything they make is amazing!
- Spinach & Herb Dip, also by Alicia’s Homemade
Salad
Rachel’s Side Salad (We used leftover veggies we had in the fridge and topped it with dressing we already had on hand. We may all be stuck at home, but make sure you’re still getting those vegetables in every now and then!)
Main Course
- Joey’s Favorite Food (sandwiches, of course. We decided to do BLT’s.)
- Chandler’s Mac & Cheese with Sliced Hot Dogs (Kraft Mac & Cheese fits the 90s bill perfectly)
Dessert
Phoebe’s Nesele Toulouse Cookies (We supported another local small business with this one and ordered Nutella-stuffed chocolate chip cookies from The Queen’s Cups. You can also find the “official” Nestle Recipe here)
Activities
- Friends playing constantly throughout the night, because in college I bought the entire series on DVD and didn’t need to suffer endlessly when it was taken off Netflix. (Desperate for a dose of your favorite 90s crew? You can order the full series here.)
- A Friends themed photoshoot with a photo booth prop set I bought on clearance at Primark for like $2 a few years ago (Yes, I’m also shocked that I still know where it is.)
- Joey’s favorite game, Strip Poker. (Spoiler: We didn’t actually end up playing this because we’re old and were exhausted after eating all that food.)
