Is this Provence, France? No, this is Killiingworth, CT, USA.
Many a traveler dreams of strolling through the sweet smelling lavender fields in Provence, France and taking the perfect purple instagram picture to blow their friends’ minds.
I am 100% on that bandwagon but, sadly, a trip back to France is just not in the cards until at least 2020.
However, I recently saw a post on Facebook about a woman that had the same dreams and limitations as me. She googled lavender fields around her…and you know what? She found her very own aromatherapy dreamland down the street from her home here in the US! She didn’t need a ton of money to travel to the insta-spot of her dreams!
A quick google search of my own revealed that there were two lavender fields within two hours from my home! Sadly the closest one is no longer in bloom, but the website of Lavender Pond Farm in Killingworth, CT claimed that they were still in bloom. It is a 90 minute drive, but it was supposed to be a pretty gloomy day anyway so why not go on an adventure?
As I’m sure you’ve already gathered by all of these pictures, it was absolutely stunning, made better by the surprisingly beautiful day! But the true unexpected beauty was in the story of how Lavender Pond Farm came to be.
Lavender Pond Farm is a family owned farm that broke ground in June 2014. The couple that own it were inspired by a children’s book and the question “what are you doing to make the world more beautiful?” This lavender farm is the answer to that question.
But that’s not all…LPF is rooted in family values. This farm serves as a beautiful tribute to one of the owners’ moms and was also an opportunity to teach their children what it is like to build something from the ground up.
A beautiful farm, a beautiful story, a beautiful family…and a super cute “lavendoodle”. Lavender Pond Farm exceeded all of my wildest dreams. It’s amazing what you can find when you look in your own (national) backyard…see what I meant before when I said it was possible to travel with no money???
Not mentioned, because it didn’t really seem to flow anywhere in this post but I still loved it, is the fact that they have a solar flower to help power the farm! You all will soon learn that I am all about sustainable farming and decreasing our carbon footprints. I won’t pretend to be an expert on anything, I still eat meat, and I’m too poor to afford the most eco-friendly clothing. But I’m doing my best to make better choices one day at a time.
If you’re like me and you dragged your man here to take some awesome pictures, you should reward him with a trip to Stony Creek Brewery.
